French

At St Teresa’s we teach French through the Kapow Primary scheme of work. This fully meets the National Curriculum requirement for Key Stage 2 Languages and reflects the Ofsted research review: languages.
French is taught from Year 3 to Year 6, giving every pupil four full years to build language skills and cultural understanding.

Our Intent

We aim for children to:

  • Develop confidence to speak, listen, read and write in French for real purposes.

  • Build a secure grasp of the three knowledge strands—Phonics, Vocabulary and Grammar—which underpin successful language learning.

  • Grow cultural awareness of France and the wider French-speaking world, broadening horizons and celebrating diversity.

  • Apply transferable language-detective skills, deepening understanding of English grammar and supporting future language learning.

Our Implementation

  • Spiral curriculum: From Year 3 to Year 6, key vocabulary and grammar are revisited and deepened each year across engaging themes such as greetings, food, families, sport and holidays.

  • Balanced skills: Children practise listening, speaking, reading and writing through songs, stories, games, role-play and creative projects.

  • Pronunciation and phonics: Explicit teaching (including Kapow’s Mouth mechanics videos) ensures accurate sound-spelling links and fluent speech.

  • Progressive grammar: Pupils move from simple sentence structures in Year 3 to using different tenses and more complex expressions by Year 6.

  • Inclusive practice: Differentiated guidance and multimedia resources support teachers and pupils of all abilities.

Our Impact

By the end of Year 6 pupils:

  • Hold simple conversations, ask and answer questions, and express opinions confidently.

  • Read and write short texts from memory, adapting known language to new contexts.

  • Use accurate pronunciation, intonation and grammar, meeting end-of-Key Stage 2 national expectations.

  • Possess the curiosity, skills and confidence to continue language learning at secondary school and beyond.
