History
At St Teresa’s we teach History through the Kapow Primary scheme of work, which provides full coverage of the National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2 and is closely aligned with Ofsted’s history research review. Our approach inspires pupils to be curious, critical thinkers who can ask questions, weigh evidence and develop a secure sense of chronology.
We aim to help children:
Know and understand Britain’s past and how it links to the wider world
Explore key concepts such as power, invasion and settlement, civilisation, trade and achievements of humankind
Develop empathy and an appreciation of diversity by learning how different societies lived and changed over time.
Enquiry-led learning: Every unit starts with a big question and follows an enquiry cycle – Question, Investigate, Interpret, Evaluate and Conclude, Communicate.
Progressive knowledge and skills: Substantive concepts (people, events, ideas) and disciplinary skills (e.g. cause and consequence, historical significance) are revisited in a spiral curriculum, each time in greater depth.
Chronological understanding: Children build a “mental timeline”, placing new knowledge alongside what they already know.
Rich experiences: Lessons are practical and engaging, supported by high-quality resources and knowledge organisers.
Children leave St Teresa’s with:
Secure historical knowledge and the vocabulary to explain it
The ability to analyse sources, compare periods and make connections across time and place
An appreciation of how history shapes the present and future.
